Hoodia Product Development Outlives Unilever Collapse

March 16, 2009

The worldwide economic crisis has had an effect on nearly every industry. Sellers of authentic hoodia products are no exception.

Previously, the UK companies Unilever and Phytopharm had collaborated in an effort to create a new product that was soon to be made available to the public. Upon collapse of this seemingly strong partnership about four months ago efforts to continue the development of this new hoodia weight loss supplement were slow-going.

Currently Phytopharm appears to be putting the project on hold. Yet, the company is still searching for the right partnership and/or proposition in hopes to continue the licensed production of this new product.

This new supplement is expected to contain an extract from a hoodia gordonni plant native to South Africa. The anticipated release of this product is in the latter half of 2009. This of course is pending any possible delays, which the company seems to hope will not happen.

So much politics surrounds the release of this new product. For one, the standards that apply to export, production, and distribution of any authentic hoodia supply are very strict.

Only the companies who have obtained proper licensing are allowed to deal with the authentic hoodia ingredient. With that, of course there is the temptation of selling fake hoodia which many companies have done.

However, selling fake hoodia has caught up with many suppliers. Therefore, suppliers of authentic versions of this weight loss source seemingly have to work extra hard to market the “real thing.”
